More Than a Prescription: Julie Bazzle and the Heart of St. Luke's Pharmacy

When patients visit St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic, their appointment doesn't end when they leave the exam room, it concludes at our Pharmacy.  Leading that effort is Julie Bazzle, whose compassion, expertise, and determination help ensure that our patients receive the medications they need to live healthier lives.

Julie does more than fill prescriptions. She navigates complex patient assistance programs, works with providers to find affordable medication options, coordinates with pharmaceutical partners, and helps patients understand how to take their medications safely.

Her dedication extends beyond our patients. Julie was recently honored as Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy's 2025–2026 Preceptor of the Year, recognizing her exceptional work mentoring the next generation of pharmacists. It's an honor that perfectly reflects what we see every day; Julie teaches not only pharmaceutical knowledge, but also compassion, problem-solving, and patient-centered care.

That commitment makes an incredible difference. In 2025, St. Luke's provided 19,566 prescriptions at no cost to uninsured patients throughout Spartanburg County. For someone living with diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, or heart disease, access to medication can mean avoiding complications, staying out of the hospital, and continuing to care for their family.

Making that possible takes an incredible network of partners. Through Welvista, Direct Relief, Americares, medication assistance programs, and our local distributor, Smith Drug Company, St. Luke's helps patients overcome financial barriers that would otherwise make treatment impossible. These partnerships allow us to connect patients with life-saving medications that would be out of reach for many uninsured families.

The pharmacy also serves as a place where patients can receive essential personal care items, including toiletries and hygiene products, made available through generous community donations. These everyday necessities help support the overall health, dignity, and well-being of the neighbors we serve.

The work is also supported through the Wallace Pharmacy Fund, which helps sustain our pharmacy and ensures patients continue receiving the medications they need. Every gift to the fund helps transform a prescription into something much greater: better health, greater stability, and hope for the future.

At St. Luke's, we know healthcare doesn't stop with a diagnosis. It continues with every prescription filled, every question answered, every personal care item shared, and every patient who leaves knowing they have the resources to follow the treatment plan created for them.
